Editing and filming technique

Rhianna-Cheers (drink to that)
The final section in our music video involves a 35 second montage of the male and females past memories. We would ideally like this part of the music video to stand out from the rest of our video. To gain a better idea of how to do this, we decided to look at different editing techniques and also the filming techniques. We chose to look at the music video Rihanna's Cheers (Drink to That) as it portrayed well what we want to do.

This video shows a mixture of home footage and touring footage, which we would ideally like to show in our video, a lot of it being handheld using a steadicam which we also want to include although we do not possess a steadicam. We would like to involve hand held shots aswell as shots from the tripod. In order to make the footage stand out and look better, we will need to involve a lot of different shots. Including pan shots, long shots, mid shots, quick shots, short clips and a wide variation of angles. We are planning on trying to recreate this using both final cut express and also, photoshot.

Props used in music video's

Different genres of music video can be identified by the different props used within them.

Instruments; these are often used in music videos, guitars and pianos are usually the most common.

(Johnny Cash - Hurt)

(Two door cinema club - Undercover Martyn)

DJ decks;these are often used in party songs mainly clubland music videos and dance music.
(David Guetta - Little Bad Girl)

Expensive/fast cars; cars are usually used in r&b, rap and hip-hop music.

(Sugarbabes - About a girl)

(Rhianna - Rehab)

Cast

Now we have decided on the story to go with our music, we have now  also selected our cast. Forour video, we decided upon one female character and one male character to cast.
In our previous video, our 2 minute thriller opening, we faced some difficulties with the cast as our original cast could rarely show. Therefore, this time round we have decided to cast two members from our origninal group. This won't be a problem because we only have a few shots which need to actually involve both characters, most shots are of just the female and therefore there will nearly always be two people behind the camera controlling it. Furthermore, we feel this may benefit us too because we will all take the filming seriously as we all know the direction in which we want to take the video and are all on the same wavelengh.
Cast;
Female: Sarah Warnock

Male: Connor Murray

chosen locations - Montage

In the final section of our music video, we have decided to have a montage. For this montage section, we have decided to use a variation of locations although, want them to be different from the rest of our locations used within the music video. Hopefully this will enable the audience to clearly state the montage and the other parts of the video. Below are the ideas we have came up with for the montage, we didn't want to put them in a storyboard as we don't want to put them in a order we want to create a flow.

Central Park
  • Swinging on the swings
  • Sitting under a large, solitary tree
  • Having a picnic
Eastbrook End
  • Running through long grass
  • Feeding the ducks
  • Sitting by the lake
  • Kiss?
House
  • Opening birthday presents
  • Making cakes
  • Waving into camera
  • Feeding/playing with dog
London
  • Train together
  • Train alone
  • Run amongst pigeons
  • Site seeing
Beach
  • Arcades
  • Pier
  • Beach houses
  • Sitting on wall - boy hugs girl

chosen locations

We've chosen to use a variety of different locations within our music video. Including memorable places, a cemetery and an picturesque place.

We have looked at many picturesque places but our final decision rests on going to Walton-on-the-naze. This is because we recently visited this beach for a holiday and discovered it had an amazing beach which is normally pretty empty. Furthermore, the beach is only an hour's drive and possesses vast amounts of breathtaking landscapes.

For the cemetery seen, we have chosen to go to our local cemetery, the closest as it's only a short bus drive away. Furthermore, the cemetery is found on a main road, so we shouldn't get into peoples ways as there is a lot of space around it. Therefore, we shouldn't find any difficulties.

Finally, the memorable locations are places in which we have all visited plenty of times and places which we believe will be perceivable as memories of a boyfriend and girlfriend. The locations we have decided upon so far are a local park, London and one of the group members houses. More will be said about these locations when we have decided exactly.

Location research

Because we have decided to use an idyllic and scenic area within our music video, we decided it would be sensible to research other music videos which contain these scenes as well.  One video a member of our group found that contained this was 'Skyscraper' by Demi Lovato.

This video is a good example of what we would like to show as it includes many different aspects of the shots including extreme long-shots, long shots, close ups and mid shots. This emphasises the isolation of the singer as the location is deserted and also accentuates the emotion also shown by the singer, which we would also like to depict.

Controversy as a possibility in our music video

As a group, we have discussed the issue of including something controversial in our music video although have decided not to included any. This is because we all agreed that controversy may be a hard point to carry out and try to explain throughout our music video and reasonings. Also, it may become confusing and more work to try to analyse our video if it involves controversy. Therefore, we have chose to instead concentrate on creating a better quality video to attract viewers.

Some controversies we considered:

Molestation; Our song dicusses the negative effects of a perhaps traumatic effect, therefore it would be possible to include or attempt an unwanted sexual experience. However, we decided not to do this as it can be very offensive and difficult to portray and we do not wish to offend in our video.

Natural disasters; If we were to take our lyrics literally as mentioned earlier, we could include a natural disaster such as an earthquake 'when your world trembles and quakes'. Although we realised this would most probably be impossible to replicate as it would be highly unlikely that we'd catch a natural disaster on camera as they are normally unexpected and dangerous! Furthermore, in order to replicate a natural disaster it would be very expensive therefore we chose not to include this either.

Same-sex relationships; In today's world same-sex relationships are normally now considered as 'normal' although there is still high controversy around the issue as many people are prejudice about them. This may cause us to lose popularity with our music video as some people may not want to watch it or may critisise it. Furthermore, this issue may distract many, and ourselves, from the actual point of our music video and therefore make our overall quality and performance poor.

Provisional idea

As a group, we have recently decided that our song, 'Corner', would go well with a music video that tells a story. Although this differs from the original song, 'skinny love' by Birdie, which inspired us, many other music videos have been succesful which tell a story for example, 'Your song' by Ellie Goulding and 'How to love' by Lil Wayne.
Our idea for the song involves two main characters, a male and a female.
To begin with, the video will start with the female walking alone in our picturesque environment, looking upset although no totally hysterical. Next, she will see the male approaching her and her mood will be lifted, becoming happier. We discover he is a romantic interest, explaining the change in her mood beginning off sad and then becoming happier as he arrives. This is because they  appear to be joking and having fun, showing the girl is happy now they are together.
The next part of the music video will involve the female walking alone, approaching a cemetery and holding a bouquet of flowers carrying a distant look upon her face. She will walk into the cemetery  to a grave stone, place the flowers down and then step back looking at the gravestone. After this, the male will appear placing his hand on the females shoulder, before fading out. This is when we realise the male has passed away, she now relies on the memories she has on him to keep her going.
A tear will roll down the girls cheek, then a montage will be shown highlighting all the memories and happy times the couple had once shared. This will emphasise the emotion of the music video and also the dependance the male and female had upon eachother. These memories will be shown whilst the music because a more positive mood.
The final shot, we have decided to show the female as happy as she remembers the memories her and the male shared and although she is still disheartened by the fact he is dead, her mood becomes happier when she remembers him.
We are hoping to acheive a high quality music video as we believe the stpry will be very emotive and fit in with the song we have chosen well.

Our ideas in a brainstorm

Because we have our song, we were able to start thinking of ideas for our music video. Below are our ideas shown in a brainstorm we created.

BT Infinity advert

The song we have chosen to use has been recently shown in a BT advert on the TV. We decided to include the advert to show how they used it and whether it worked effectively or not.

Although, throughout this advert the song is used positively the lyrics 'when your world trembles and quakes' show how something is changing, In this video it is portrayed as changing for the better. This is because the advert is trying to sell a product, they want to catch the audiences attention positively.Whereas, our video is using the song to produce an emotional music video and we have chosen to interprett the lyrics in a different view. Reasons for this may be because we are showing the entire song, and do not intend to try and sell a product to an audience.

Analysis of the lyrics to 'Corner'

Doo doo doo
Ooh
Ooh

Ooh
Ooh

Doo doo doo
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

Doo doo
Ooh
Ooh
The repetition of the lyrics suggests patience and perhaps their are feelings and emotions behind the lyrics.
When your world trembles and quakes
And your footing suddenly shifts and shakes

This suggests perhaps a natural disaster has occurred for example an earthquake. Although it could be suggesting that in the past something traumatic has happened to her causing the person to feel perhaps unstable and to
re-evaluate their life. However the lyrics have not been positive or negative yet, not knowing which way the song will turn.
Take my hand
We'll hide in the corner
Hide in the corner
Take my hand
We'll hide 'til it's over
'Til it's all over

The artist saying 'take my hand' could be taken literally, showing she is talking to someone or asking for help from someone.
The next phrase 'hide in the corner' suggests that she may be scared and literally searching for somewhere to hid or escape to. Although using the word 'corner' could be highlighting the artists want to be unnoticed and hidden from others. Trying not to attract attention she may be getting.

La la la la la
La la la la la
La la la la la
La la la la la la la

This part of the song sounds optimistic, potentially indicating a more positive side to the song. Her pain has ended, she is remembering the more happier times of her life.

We have choices to make
We have promises that we can't break
There is nothing left to lose
So hold on to me
I'll hold on to you

The word 'Choices' suggests the artist is now in control of her life and making her own decisions.Furthermore, the artist also shows that she still has current commitments prior to this event when she says 'promises'. Finally, by the line 'nothing left to lose', we discover that the artist has lost everything. Saying she has nothing left to lose suggests she has given up and emphasises the more negative side to the song once again.
Overall, the song shows the events of her life she is portraying within the song.  There are many mixed emotions throughout the song, this demonstrates both the negative and positive sides of the song which have affected the artist severely and changed it completely.

We got permission! :)

Later the same day, we recieved an email from Allie Moss regading our question to use her song for our A2 media studies project. We had been granted permission to use it by her. We are extremely happy about thisnews as we haven't yet recieved emails from the other requests and were hoping to use this the song the most as it was all three of our favourite choice. We can now think of ideas suited for this song and get on with recording :).
The permission email is shown below;
