Requesting our song!!

After searching for a suitable song to our desired genre, we decided upon 3 songs and sent emails to all three requesting permission.
The first song is 'Rough cut' by Amber Rubarth. We foundthis song at http://www.unsigned.com/

The second song we decided upon was 'Neopolitan Dreams' by Lisa Mitchell. Although, we later found out this artist is signed to Warner Music Australia, and therefore gaining permission to use the song may not be granted. So we decided to look for a third song.

The third and final song we chose, our favourite of the three, was 'Corner' by Allie Moss.

We have requested permission for all three of the songs we like and are now awaiting the responses.
One of themembers of ourteam sent an email to Allie Moss requesting permission to use her song.The email he sent to Moss' website is shown below;

Further inspiration; Ellie Goulding, 'Your song'

This song inspiredus because it shows a lot of emotion. Also, we liked the genre of the music and how well the video fit in with it. We thought this song very good as it would be more simple to lip sync to, this also helped us decide upon this genre for our music video.
Ellie Goulding sings in specific places and then shows memories of her life, this is an idea in which we would like to incorporate into our own music video. A story about the girls life and her memories within it. The music video is shown below:

Finding our music

In order to find the right music we have been looking on many unsigned music websites such as www.unsigned.com

We decided to choose a song similar to 'Skinny Love' by Bon Iver covered by Birdy as we all like the type of music and thought it may be easier for all of us to make a video to suit this genre of music and also more interesting. The musicvideo is shown below;

'Nothing Compares' - Sinead O'Connor

A great example of how meaning and emotion is expressed, which we discussed in class, is shown through the music video 'Nothing Compares' by Sinead O'Connor:

The song caused great controversey as it shows true emotion from Sinead O'connor who begins to cry during the song as the lyrics say, 'Mama'. This is due to her mother passing away recently. This is a brilliant example of the effectiveness of true emotion and how it catches the audience's attention and sympathy.

How might we measure the success criterea of a music promo video?

Today in class we discussed possibilities of success, these include:
  • Word of mouth
  • Number of hits on youtube
  • Sales figures
  • How memorable and discussed a video is
  • Media coverage
  • Video views
  • VMA awards
  • Influence on other music videos
  • Newspaper articles/TV reports
  • Amount of publicity
  • Downloads (Legal/Illegal)
  • Charts
  • Last word
  • Massive switch in importance of youtube from TV channels. e.g MTV
  • Viewing mainly online. e.g. Youtube

What is the purpose of a music video?

There can be many purposes to a music video, some of which include:
-To show a song in more depth
-To add value to the song
-To tell a story
-To emphasise visual element
-To Promote the song
-To Gain interest in the artist and their other songs
-To entertain the audience
-To express meaning and emotion
-To cause controversy and publicity
-To increase the artists popularity and fanbase

Music videos are mainly used in order to promote the song and the artist. Due to a music video being created, the song can be played on a wider variety of media. The song itself will not only played on the radio, but on tv channels such as VIVA, and also possibly YouTube.
As the artist's song/video becomes popular people become interested in other songs/music video's the artist may have made and therefore promotes the artist's previous songs/music video's and gain higher interest in the artist.

My favourite music video

Nobody's Perfect - Jessie J

This is one of my favourite music videos. I really like this video because it is very unique and strange. I like the aline in wonderland theme which it contains and the fact it is very dramatic fitting in with the meaning of the lyrics. I also like the extravagant costumes and actions within the video. I think it is very effective as it is eye catching and very interesting.

Brief

My task is to produce a music 'promo' video. It has to be up to 5 minutes long either working on my own or in a group. I have chose to work in a group of 3.
I will also need to produce a 'digipak' for it's release on DVD, a magazine advertisement for the DVD.
Furthermore, I will need to produce a critical evaluation on a blog including research and planning.
